Since the lease payments are deducted from your gross salary by way of salary conversion, the tax burden and social security contributions are reduced, so that your actual net costs for the company bike lease are significantly lower than the lease payments. The monetary benefit that comes in the form of the company bike is taxed according to the favorable 0.25% rule. These tax breaks allow employees to save up to 40% over a direct purchase when acquiring their bicycle or e-bike.

The main advantage of bike leasing is that it is significantly cheaper for you as an employee to use a company bike and then take it over at the end of the lease than to buy a bicycle or e-bike directly. Other advantages include the bike insurance, healthy exercise, sustainability and savings in fuel costs.

Generally, you are free to go to any bike dealer that runs a retail store for bikes in Germany. Any dealer that runs such a retail store is free to register as a Bikeleasing partner dealer and to submit your lease request. The rules for the tendering of company bike leasing in the public sector are set forth in the Sub-Threshold Contracting Regulations (Unterschwellenvergabeordnung, UVgO). The tendering rules applicable in each case depend on factors such as the estimated contract volume. Generally speaking: Yes, you can, provided that the pre-owned bike is less than 12 months old. Note that a lower price will reduce the monthly lease payments and insurance premiums. However, the monetary benefit and the takeover price at the end of the lease are computed on the basis of the RRP rather than the actual purchase price.

The private use of a company car constitutes a taxable monetary benefit. According to the company car rule (also known as company car privilege), this monetary benefit is taxed on the basis of a fixed percentage of 1% of the gross purchase price. This rule also applies to company bikes. Since 2020, a reduced rate of only 0.25% of the gross list price (0.25% rule) applies, making the bike even more affordable for company bike users.
